GO GREEN and Share Your Tips for a Chance to Win!
As part of my job, I am endlessly reading and scanning Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and the like… every once in a while, I stumble on something absolutely perfect to share with you! It’s April, which hosts National Agriculture week, Earth Day, and Global Biodiversity Day. "Green" enthusiatists may be thinking, “What can we do, how can we get involved?” In addition to the wonderful eco-conscious opportunities we have planned for the month of April here at THE AVENUE, Starbucks is also teaming up to go green! Did you know
Starbucks coffee grounds are actually yours for the taking? All you have to do is ask. Most, including myself, may view them as garbage, but as it turns out, they can serve as great pick-me-ups for your plants and flowers! Starbucks produces about 5,000 tons a year of used grounds, so there’s plenty to go around! Simply call ahead at 410-931-1056 to pick up your reserved bag.
Although Starbucks cups are already made our of recyclable materials, of the average 8.2 million paper cups of coffee sold a day, most still end up in landfills. Get involved by setting a goal to decrease your waste and stick to it by purchasing reusable cups from Starbucks for your next coffee. Reusable cups are available for just $1 and can be used up to 30 times (Sometimes even longer)! Not to mention, every time you opt to use your reusable cup, you save 10 cents on your purchase.
Maybe having your own, personalized cup is your thing – it can be hard to get into the habit, but you can eliminate your cup waste entirely by choosing to use one of the several on-the-go coffee cups and tumblers at Starbucks for daily use. Not only are you saving that paper cup each day, but there are perks! You still save 10 cents on your beverage purchase each time you use your tumbler, AND if you bring in your own tumbler or reusable cup this Friday, April 19th, Starbucks is celebrating their very first coffee blend, House Blend. Enjoy a FREE tall coffee until 12pm to all customers!
Speaking of green conscious ideas… do you have any unique or special green tips you would like to share? Here’s a few we can share with you!
• Composting is a safe, natural method of converting yard waste and non-meat kitchen scraps into a valuable organic product that can be used as mulch or tilled into gardens and flower beds to improve soil health.
• Many species of turf go dormant during the hot, dry summer months. It is not necessary to water grass that is has gone dormant. The grass will green up once the rains return.
• In 2011, Maryland farmers produced 40 million pounds of apples, 569 million eggs, and 3.9 million tons of peaches!
